A man in his 20’s accidentally fell to his death and his two friends had to be rope rescued at Albion Falls yesterday, but it didn’t stop dozens of people who flocked to the falls on Sunday.
Many of them were visibly ignoring the rules and taking chances by scaling steep areas and ignoring signs, despite the young man falling 40 meters to his death. However, there are no main trails to make it to the bottom of the water fall.
Last year the Hamilton Fire Department executed 25 rope rescues. So far this year, there have been three and those of those rescues were executed at Albion Falls.
Recently a 60-year-old woman had to be rescued after falling 15 feet.
The City of Hamilton does mark the safest areas near a water fall. But, whenever someone goes off the beaten path the city makes it clear that they do so at their own risk. The City of Hamilton also has a detailed page on their website for water fall safety.
When it comes to hiking the falls fire officials ask that people wear the proper footwear and to stay one full body length away from ledges. Ultimately though, officials highly recommend that people stick to the safe viewing platforms.
