Police have closed off Walkers Line between Berton Ave and Constable Henshaw Blvd in Burlington after three city workers were hit by a SUV.
Burlington mayor Rick Goldring calls the crash “heartbreaking”, and is visting the victims in Hamilton General Hospital.
The employees are all in their early 20’s, and were working on flower bed maintenance when they were struck. Two men, both summer students, suffered serious head injuries and are in critical condition. A female full-time employee has minor injuries.
Sylvia Cafagna was on her break when it happened. “I saw a car hit the curb and saw people up in the air and hit the ground. Before I knew it, me and another colleague stopped traffic and the police were here within minutes.”
Halton police Sgt Dwayne Perron appreciated the help. “Obviously their intent was to help people that were in medical distress. They did a great job in keeping them calm and trying to assess what happened before we got here.”
“It’s not something we recommend as far as safety goes.”
The driver of the SUV is believed to have blacked out either before or after the crash.
Grief counselors are being made available to City of Burlington workers.
The intersection is expected to be closed until about 3 o’clock while police investigate.
