The Ontario Labour Board has certified Unifor to represent workers at the first unionized Walmart warehouse in the country.
This certification allows Unifor to be the bargaining agent for some 800 workers at the Mississauga site.
Unifor president, Lana Payne, previously said the workers were eager to unionize for a number of reasons.
Payne said workers were facing challenging working conditions, a lack of benefits, and poor pay compared to their employer’s profits.
Walmart Canada says the company is disappointed in the outcome, and believes its employees don’t need a union to represent them, citing a culture of open communication.
