CHCH News told you about it Thursday night — and Friday, U.S. Steel confirmed it.

The last blast furnace at its Hamilton plant will be shut down, as the company says, ‘indefinitely.’ The move comes amidst troubled negotiations with the Steelworkers union, with U.S. Steel blaming market conditions. A strike or lockout remains a possibility.

The company says workers affected will be transferred to other plants.

Local 1005 President Rolf Gerstenberger spoke to CHCH News Thursday night, expressing hope that the plant will re-open.
