One of the brightest young stars in all of baseball has died. Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident early Sunday morning, along with two of his friends. Major League Baseball says it’s “stunned and devastated” by the death of the 24-year-old, who escaped from cCba by boat as a teenager. In his four years with the Marlins, Fernandez was an all-star twice and the national league rookie of the year in 2013.

And the Calgary Stampeders are mourning the loss of one of its own. Defensive back Mylan Hicks died in a shooting early yesterday morning outside a bar in Calgary. Some players were at the Marquee Beer Market & Stage celebrating Saturday’s victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Police say there was an altercation inside the nightclub that continued outside, where the shooting occurred. Three people have been arrested.
Twenty three year old Hicks, who joined the team in May, was on their practice roster and according to many of his teammates was great both on and off the field.
