Two students have been taken to hospital, one with serious injuries, following an “incident” at a Welland high school.
Niagara police were called to Notre Dame College School on Smith St. around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Officers arrived on scene and found two students suffering from injuries. One student was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while the other was taken via land ambulance to an out of town hospital with serious injuries.
Notre Dame principal Ken Griespma said around 11 a.m. a student who was “bleeding rather profusely” was brought to the main office by other students. Staff provided first aid to the victim until emergency personnel arrived on scene.
Police Cst. Phil Gavin said one person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The incident prompted the high school and St. Kevin Catholic Elementary school to be placed in hold and secure. The hold and secure has since been lifted at both schools.
Last Wednesday, Niagara police launched an investigation into alleged social media threats made towards Notre Dame.
Students reported to school staff and police that a former student had made threats online.
Police spoke with the former student and determined there were never any threats made and “the allegations were unfounded.”
Niagara police are investigating to see if Wednesday’s incident is related to last week’s threats.
