Two sides remain ‘far apart’ in GM CAMI strike, says union

The union representing roughly 2500 striking workers at GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont. says the two sides remain far apart on economics and job security issues.

Members of Unifor Local 88 walked off the job on September 17 as negotiators worked to have GM designate the Ingersoll plant as the lead producer of the Equinox SUV. The vehicle is also in Mexico.

Unifor says they have been meeting daily with the automaker since September 27 and have worked through a lot of the “contract language.”

Earlier this week, Unifor president Jerry Dias called the company’s most recent offer “fluff,” saying it still allows GM to shift its resources away from the Ingersoll plant.

The company and the union have agreed to take a break over the weekend and reconvene on October 10.

“In the event GM Detroit responds sooner we have made it clear that the Master Bargaining Committee, and our Unifor National Representatives, are available to meet at a moment’s notice,” said the union on their website.
