Two dogs recovering following neglect and malnourishment: Niagara Humane Society

The Niagara Humane Society says two dogs still have the potential to live full lives after they were found in cruel conditions. A caution, some of the video in this story may be hard for some to watch.
The dogs are ailing physically but spirits are high for Calissa and Buster who were saved after weeks of neglect and malnourishment in a West Lincoln home.
“I was a cruelty investigator for 17 years and in my experience, this is definitely in the top 3 cases,” Greer said.
Executive director for Niagara SPCA and humane society John Greer says the poodle-mixed dogs were dropped off on Nov. 2 at the facility by the owners’ family following the owner’s death.
Greer says he isn’t aware of the circumstances surrounding the cruelty case but when they received both dogs they assessed both have been living in poor conditions for numerous weeks resulting in Buster suffering life-altering injuries.
“The fur matted so badly around their paws, it cut off their blood supply, the front leg, the paw is missing, the other leg is dangling by a piece,” Greer said.
The dogs had to be sedated while vets used scalpels to cut their matted hair.
Greer is urging people to call the humane society if they can’t take care of their pets.
The humane society says the dogs will have to go through an extensive rehabilitation process that includes blood work to check for ailments and surgeries.
The humane society’s vet technician didn’t say how long the rehab process will take but both dogs are on a special diet and will get neutered.
As the dogs recover they will be up for adoption.
