Two bodies now recovered from fatal Port Colborne house fire

Emergency crews have recovered two bodies following a deadly house fire that killed a mother, her two children and her grandmother in Port Colborne Wednesday morning.  Crews have been combing through the charred rubble for three days, but subzero temperatures have slowed the investigation.

An industrial warming blanket was laid out overnight to help melt parts of the second floor bedroom, which is where crews made the discovery.

Two year-old Joshua was one three bodies trapped in the early morning fire. The bodies of his 15-year-old sister Samantha and 37-year-old mother Tammy Burd were also trapped inside.

The children’s great-grandmother, Eva Burd, was pulled from the burning house by firefighters, but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Recovery efforts have been hampered by freezing temperatures. Snow and accumulation of ice has made the house brittle and made police fear the structure will collapse into itself if investigators get inside.

Niagara Regional Police say they haven’t located the third body, but they plan on taking the house apart bit by bit and will be working into the weekend.
