Toronto holds vigil of support

Hundreds filled Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto Saturday afternoon to honour the victims of Friday night’s deadly attacks in Paris.

People lit candles, laid flowers and sang the French national anthem. Toronto began showing its support for France Friday with both the CN Tower and the “Toronto” sign in Nathan Phillips Square lit up in the colours of the French flag.

Toronto Mayor John Tory spoke at the vigil, calling the attacks an act of terrorism: “In Toronto, we live together in peace and with respect for one another and with respect for our differences and we must cherish those values and work to reinforce them. These are not the rational acts of people connected to any faith or any value system or any nationality. These are the acts of evil people whose only mission is destruction and hatred and try to destroy our way of life. We will protect with our friends in France and in Paris the great freedoms and traditions of civilized democratic people everywhere in this city, in France, in Paris and around the world.”

Vigils were planned for cities across the country Saturday, including in Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver and Calgary.
