Tornado touches down in New Tecumseth

(Updated) Environment Canada is confirming that a low intensity tornado touched down just east of Tottenham, Ontario at 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

It is being rated as an EF-1 tornado with wind speeds of between 135 and 175 kilometres an hour. One horse was killed, but there have been no other reports of injuries. One local resident says his house narrowly escaped the path of the tornado by just 500 feet.

This tornado comes just one week after a stronger EF-2 twister struck Angus, Ontario, which is 35 kilometers north of Tottenham. And while these are a coincidence, Environment Canada says it’s not uncommon to see tornados in the area.

All of southern Ontario from Windsor east toward Ottawa is considered one of Canada’s tornado alleys.
