Ticats’ tailgate area still permitted after Hamilton votes in favour of public alcohol use

A controversial proposal to make it harder to drink on city property — including a ban of tailgating parties — was defeated 13 to 1 in Hamilton yesterday.
The Public Health Sub-Committee had recently approved a staff recommendation to implement an updated and stricter municipal alcohol policy, but the ban on tailgating caused an uproar amongst some in Hamilton.
Hamilton Tiger Cats fans tailgate on the site of the former Dominion Glass facility north of Lloyd Street and east of Gage Avenue North, which is now a city park.
Under the new rules the site could no longer be used for tailgating.
The defeat means the 2011 City alcohol bylaw is still in effect, and tailgating is still permitted.
The Public Health Committee ensures that the City of Hamilton meets or exceeds its obligations as a Board of Health under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
