The Meddler is a dramatic comedy written and directed by Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World). The film held its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and has garnered positive acclaim, especially for Susan Sarandon’s leading performance. Also starring in the film are Rose Byrne, J. K. Simmons, Cecily Strong, Jerrod Carmichael, and Jason Ritter.
With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini has happily relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be near her daughter Lori, a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others – as well as her own – and find a new purpose in life.
Scafaria wrote her script after going through the same situation with her Mom after her Father passed away. “After he died, my mom and I were grieving so differently, it was hard to find common ground. But in watching her handle her grief so beautifully, so optimistically, I realized that I wanted to tell her story. And I wanted to be honest about it—how lonely it was, how mean I could be, how annoying she could be, but also how generous and giving, and how unbelievably brave she was for making that big of a sea change.”
The Meddler is rated PG.
