Some of the best young basketball players in the world have descended on St. Catharines for the FIBA Americas Championship.

After winning gold last year, team Canada is hoping to reach the same heights for a second straight year.

Toronto’s Andrew Nembhard headlines the team as this year’s captain. “Its just a great honour to represent your country and also be the captain and try to lead the guys to victory this week”.

This is the first time the international tournament has been held in Canada and it features players from eight countries.

The Meridian Centre will host the athletes for a total of 24 games, all of the teams vying for a chance to win gold. The top four teams will also qualify for the FIBA World Cup next year a title that Canada is eager to defend.

The tournament runs for ten days beginning this Sunday. Canada faces off against Argentina this Sunday, with tip off at 2:15.
