As part of a new pilot program, the City of Hamilton is enforcing parking rules on Sundays, but on-street parking will remain free.

In an email to CHCH News city staff say, “all on-street paid parking zones are free on Sundays and will remain free during the pilot project.”

They add that most municipally operated parking lots are free on Sundays and will remain that way during the duration of the pilot.

Exceptions to this are the Summers Lane parking garage located at 1 Summers Ln. and the parking lot at 294 Victoria Ave. North across from Hamilton General Hospital. At these two parking locations, regular paid parking and enforcement have been in place on Sundays and will continue during the pilot.

The Sunday parking enforcement pilot began March 29. City officials say it is being done to “help keep streets safe and ensure fair parking for everyone.”

Until March 29, parking enforcement was only in place Monday through Saturday.

Municipal parking meters display their hours of operation and the city says these hours are not changing as part of the pilot.

Hamilton officials have provided numbers related to parking complaints and tickets issued Sunday, March 29.

The city says 62 parking complaints were received and 99 tickets were issued on March 29. The combined total of fines issued was $5,445.

The following is a list of penalty types enforced by the City of Hamilton:

  • Time Limit;
  • Signed Area (No Parking or No Stopping);
  • Obstruct Sidewalk;
  • Unauthorized Private Property;
  • Fire Route;
  • Blocked Approach/Driveway;
  • Too Close to Intersection;
  • Parking on Boulevard.
