Students away from home

For a lot of university students, they’re now living at their home away from home. And on this first full weekend of the school year, McMaster students have closed their books, and are back to the bars.

Elise Copps has a look at what they’re up to.

Frosh week is in full swing. And students are flocking to bars, parties and welcome events.

Darian Collina is a bartender at Sizzle/Koi: “Once everyone is in the mentality that they’re coming back to school, they’re just ready to let loose and have so much fun.”

Tonight, “Lights” performed at the university’s biggest concert ever. 6000 students packed in front of the stage, making it all worth the sleepless nights.

Lucas Canzona is with the Mac Students Association: “We planned for about a year. We’ve just been going to four months straight to get all this frosh ready for all the students coming in.”

It’s technically a dry orientation week.

Kirby Tobin is a frosh leader: We don’t necessarily endorse coming to those events intoxicated. But it’s obviously part of the culture, so if it happens we deal with it as safely and responsible as possible.

And it certainly happens.

Tate Pulfer is a third year student: “We’ve been drinking for about a week straight now. Going hard. Cops have only come about 4 times. “There’s an event every night and everyone goes out first and there’s like a 500 people line up and it’s awesome.”

“So much dancing, so much drinking. it’s been an unbelievable week, I can’t even remember half of it.”

All the partying is balanced out by plenty of activities to break the ice so students feel right at home, before it’s time to hit the books.
