This latest blast of lake effect snow has caused havoc on the highways and blocked truck drivers trying to get over the border. For the second time in a matter of weeks, hundreds of truckers are trapped in Fort Erie waiting for the weather to clear.

By this morning the truck stop in Fort Erie was packed with hundreds of transports.

“They turned me back this morning about 8am. (What did they tell you?) The bridge is closed. Go back to the truck stop.”

Trucks were blocked at the base of the Peace Bridge. Drivers told they could go no farther. All the major highways around Buffalo were closed.

This time officials in New York got ahead of storm. They closed the N.Y. Thruway from Rochester to Pennsylvania and all the highways south and east of Buffalo.

Some drivers were happy with the detour.

“Because I’m on my way to Ohio. I don’t want to get in a mess.”

Others were not.

“I’m probably not going to be able to get my load today, which means I’m going to be sitting for the weekend.”

Even on the QEW, the passing lane was snow-covered and the road icy. Two people in an SUV were trapped when the vehicle slid off the QEW at Sodom Road and flipped over into a deep ditch.

And they say this Arctic blast isn’t over yet. Just looking over the water towards Buffalo makes you shiver.

But if there’s anything positive to say about this weather — in some places, the snow is as pretty as a postcard.
