Stoney Creek boy hospitalized after e-bike hit-and-run near elementary school

A four-year old boy in Stoney Creek is currently in hospital suffering from serious injuries, including a fractured skull, after being the victim of a hit-and-run Friday night.
The assailant was riding an electric bike and fled the scene before police arrived.
Before the accident, Theo was full of energy and smiles, playing in the sandbox.
Today, Theo is suffering from multiple injuries, including a fractured skull and possible spinal injuries.
“He’s in a lot of pain and discomfort. He has several fractures to the skull, one behind the orbital bone and one being in the nose area,” said Theo’s mom, Melissa Debicki.
According to Debicki, police are telling her they are investigating the area around Collegiate Elementary School near Evergreen Avenue where the incident occurred.
Just before 5 p.m. on Friday, Debicki’s husband took Theo to pick up their other child from daycare, which is in Collegiate Elementary. Debicki says her son does not really comprehend what happened and she is calling for stricter laws around e-bikes.
“I would like to see the laws change in terms of who is able to own and operate these motor vehicles. I believe you should be licensed to own and operate one,” said Debicki.
Residents in the area are concerned about speed from cars, e-bikes and electric scooters.
Karen Harbour has lived in the neighbourhood for ten years and has advocated for more speed bumps for the cars alone.
Harbour is concerned about the lack of safety measures taken by e-bike and e-scooter riders – especially when the rules about who can ride them and where are unclear.
“What I look at and see is the speed because sometimes I’m sitting outside on my veranda and I see them going by, again, without the helmets and the speed. I mean, only this year they put in speed bumps which I have been advocating for for years,” said Harbour.
“In our neighbourhood there’s a notorious one that goes through the stop sign, the four way stop around the corner on his back wheel quite often,” said local resident Larry Mitchell.
Theo will remain in hospital with no timeline for recovery while the investigation continues.
Hamilton police were not available for comment today while the family hopes someone will come forward with information leading to the suspect.
