St. Catharines driver facing multiple charges after fleeing police

A St. Catharines man is facing multiple charges after fleeing on foot when police determined license plates on a pickup truck were not authorized for that vehicle.

Niagara police said a uniformed officer observed the pickup Monday afternoon in the area of Queenston and Ida streets in St. Catharines and stopped the truck. The driver reportedly fled on foot then returned a short time later.

The driver, 40-year-old Joshua Stephens of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with multiple criminal, driving and insurance charges which include:

  • Flight From Police;
  • Fail to Comply with Release Order;
  • Use Plate Not Authorized;
  • Driving While Under Suspension;
  • Driver Fail to Surrender Licence;
  • Fail to Surrender Permit for Motor Vehicle;
  • Drive Motor Vehicle, No Currently Validated Permit;
  • Fail to Apply for Permit on Becoming Owner;
  • Obstruct Plate;
  • Drive Motor Vehicle No Licence;
  • Fail to Surrender Insurance Card;
  • Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on Highway – No Insurance.

The truck was seized for seven days. Stephens remains in custody and is scheduled to attend a bail hearing Tuesday.
