Southern Ontario windstorm cleanup
Many people woke up without power Saturday as hydro companies continued to restore power after the wind storm Friday night.
A Hamilton man in his 50’s died after being electrocuted attempting to clear debris away from live power lines.
Branches took down the power line before six o’clock. Police and paramedics weren’t able to get to the man until hydro crews cut power to the line.
Police were still trying to locate his family today.
The wicked weather is also being blamed for the death of a 28 year old forestry worker on Fourth Line near Milton. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His 18 year old colleague was rushed to hospital fighting for his life. The windstorm also caused dangerous driving conditions.
Drivers travelling under the Skyway Bridge, after it was shut down to traffic, had a wet and wild ride home.
Shingles were peeled off roofs and tossed into the blowing wind all across the province.
Branches being knocked down by winds that were gusting more than 120 kilometers an hour.
Siding was ripped from the Hamilton Store Fixtures Shop on King Street snarling traffic downtown.
Hydro One, Ontario’s largest power utility, was reporting more than 200,000 customers affected by outages Saturday morning, though the number dropped later on.
At the peak of the storm, Alectra Utilities reported thousands people were without power.
