Environment Canada has issued cold warnings for most of southern Ontario, with some areas to see wind chills near -40 C.
The warnings cover areas surrounding the Greater Golden Horseshoe area, including Hamilton, Halton Region, Niagara Region, Brantford, and the counties of Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk.
These areas are expected to see wind chills between -30 and -35 C overnight into early Friday morning.
Areas in eastern Ontario including Ottawa are forecast to see wind chills of -33 to -38 C.
The government department says people should cover up, layer clothing and to watch out for frostbite, which can develop within minutes on exposed skin.

Signs of frostbite can include the changing of colours on fingers and toes, numbness, pain, swelling or a tingling sensation.
“If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside,” warns Environment Canada.
The cold warnings follow after a snowstorm blew through parts of the province earlier this week, which left over 40 cm of snow and caused several school boards and businesses to close.
Warm places across several municipalities will be open during cold alerts, including some recreation centres and public libraries during regular service hours.
In Hamilton, the Bennetto Community Centre will be open to members of the public to avoid the cold weather — all daytime and evening programs are cancelled until further notice.
