Smog – in March!

It’s the first day of spring – but in Hamilton the great weather is coming with a smog warning and poor air quality.

It comes after many of us woke up to dense fog for the morning commute.
There are a couple of factors involved. One is the current weather pattern of warm days and cool nights, causing a temperature inversion which you could actually see, over the harbour. That cloud is warm air, trapped beneath a layer of cooler air.

Another is the fact that the escarpment forms sort of a perfect bowl around Hamilton, trapping warm air. And there hasn’t been much wind to move that air around either.
