Skunk rescue in Hamilton’s Westdale

There’s a happy ending for a skunk that found himself stuck in a Hamilton backyard.

Wildlife officials were called to a home in Westdale this afternoon, after reports of a skunk being trapped in an 8 foot deep hole. The homeowners were renovating their backyard at the time, and were going to fill the hole with concrete, but realized they had some company.

Experts called in to deal with situations like this, like Chris Stevens of Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, say this isn’t uncommon for skunks.

“Skunks aren’t very good climbers. They’ll end up climbing down a hole and not get back out, so usually we’ll show up and try to find the best way of getting him out in the least smelly way.”

After a minutes of realizing it was set free, the skunk managed to scurry off. Officials warn if you ever stumble across a skunk in distress to call professionals – or else the situation could get a lot more smelly.
