Ontario’s police watchdog started an investigation after Halton officers shot a 43-year-old man in Milton with a “less-lethal shotgun” and an “Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield” (ARWEN) on Monday.
The Special Investigations Units (SIU) say officers were called for a disturbance report shortly after 1 a.m. at an apartment building on Bronte St. South.
Officers attempted to negotiate with the man and tried to apprehend him under the Mental Health Act.
Police say the man exited his unit with a weapon and one officer shot a round of a “less-lethal shotgun” at him – he went back inside his apartment after he got shot.

Officers tried to negotiate but were unsuccessful, police then entered the apartment and another officer discharged multiple rounds of ARWEN.
The person who got shot was apprehended and taken to hospital, investigators say he was not seriously injured.
The SIU’s mandate was invoked because an officer discharged an ARWEN, which is considered to be a firearm.
