Search for man with gun sends a Niagara Falls school into lockdown

An elementary school in Niagara Falls was placed in a hold and secure Monday as police searched for a man with a gun in the area.

Police say that around 12:38 p.m. they were called to a home on Strohan Street near Johnson Drive for reports of a man seen yelling obscenities and threatening to burn down a nearby home.

Officers were unable to locate the man, leading to multiple units searching the area.

During the search, police received information that the suspect was in possession of a firearm, leading officials to place the nearby Victoria Public School under a hold and secure.

At 2:14 p.m. investigators found the man in a backyard where he was arrested and the reported firearm was found to be a pellet gun.

The hold and secure at Victoria Park School was subsequently lifted and student dismissal ran as usual.

Carlos William Lewis, 39, of Niagara Falls now faces charges for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, two counts of uttering threats and failure to comply with release order.

Lewis remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing set for Tuesday.
