Just a few weeks ago, a small boy in a small town near Brantford, captured the love and attention of the world.

Seven year old Evan Leversage, was battling a brain tumour. It was well advanced, and it was clear that Evan would not see Christmas day. When the town of St. George rallied to give Evan one last Christmas in October it was a special gift.

Evan died last Sunday, December 6th. But today at his funeral, Evan left behind one last gift.

“There is a magic to Evan and I’ve been saying this for years. There’s something about Evan, makes people want to bend the rules. Makes them want to step outside their comfort zone and step up. I often say he makes people scribble outside the lines” says Evan’s Aunt Ashley Agar

Seven year old Evan died last Sunday, in the arms of his mother Nicole. Before that mother and son, had spent the last five years in a fight they ultimately could not win. “We went to war together.” said Nicole Wellwood “and we fought a very hard battle. And I watched him do it with laughter and a smile, and a love for life.”

It was a war that only those who fought it could understand and those who watched could only honour.

Evan’s October Christmas miracle didn’t just bring a town together. It echoed in hearts around the world. Many of whom wondered why. Why would a cancer so vicious and virulent attack and kill a seven year old boy? Evan’s Mother knew the answer to that question and through the grief and tears she could explain it to those who could not understand. “Evan was an angel. He was an angel before God took him. And, he had a purpose. And I believe that purpose was to make sure that children don’t have to fight much longer. That there can be a cure, and that people could be aware.”

And that was the gift that Evan left behind, for all of us.
