15-year-old Russian skater, Kamila Valieva is in the middle of an Olympic doping scandal and is sitting in first place, after the women’s short program Tuesday.
Her participation in the event has sparked outrage in figure skating and Olympic circles, and has even resulted in the team, and possibly women’s medal ceremonies to be cancelled. If Valieva holds on for a medal, that means there won’t be a medal ceremony. Valieva tested positive for a banned substance and was cleared to skate before the case was resolved. The court of arbitration for sport allowed her to compete because she is a minor and was subject to different rules from adult athletes, saying it would be inappropriate to hold that ceremony.
2-time Olympic figure skating medallist Meagan Duhamel is speaking out saying, “Can you imagine that’s how you’re celebrating your Olympic medal, is opening a FedEx envelope? I just can not believe that the ISU and the IOC are going to let that happen. I feel terrible for all the skaters that are going to win a medal. Whoever else will join Kamila on the podium will not get their Olympic moment. This is wrong.”
Valieva is competing under the Russian Olympic committee as Russia, the country has been banned on the international stage due to a series of positive drug tests.
Duhamel says they should fight for their medal ceremony.
