Rhymes for Young Ghouls stars relative newcomer Devery Jacobs as Alia, a young teen who works for her drug dealing uncle supplying her reserve with weed. Her job, however unorthodox, provides her with the bribe money required to keep her out of residential school. When her father gets released from prison, Alia’s money is mysteriously stolen, upsetting the delicate balance the 15 year old has built her life on.

As a Mi’gmaq Indian, director Jeff Barnaby was keen to create a warrior his people could relate to. He found his hero in the form of a young woman who fights to survive against a system designed to defeat her. The film was produced in partnership with the Canadian Film Centre’s Features program and debuted at TIFF to an enthusiastic reception. The script unanimously  won the Tribeca Film Festival’s Creative Promise Award while Jacobs recently earned a Canadian Screen Awards nod for best actress.

Rhymes for Young Ghouls is rated 14A.
