Nearly two days after a head on collision killed two young women from Hamilton, the cause of the crash seems uncertain.

As traffic flows along the Red Hill Valley Parkway there is no evidence of the crash that killed Olivia Smosarski and her best friend Jordyn Hastings.

Hamilton Police Detective, Matt Hewko is with the reconstruction unit, and says that the car lost control in the far right hand lane.

It was 11:30 tuesday when the Mazda 3 the women were in crossed from the southbound lanes into the north, hitting a minivan.

Police don’t believe foul play or weather are factors, though the road was damp. but also the tire marks show no effort to stop suddenly, or swerve say to avoid an animal.

Police are still waiting for toxicolgy reports, and to find out if mechanical failure was a factor.

With the tragic death of both Jordyan and Olivia very much a reality, the question now becomes, could something be done to prevent future incidents from occuring.

Ontario Safety League President Brian Patterson says now that the parkway has been used for a number of years, they can review best practices to see if another crash is likely to occur.

Dave Fergusson is the Chief Superintendant for traffic engineering at the City of Hamilton says the parkway design of the Red Hill is different than that of a highway like the 401.

Ferguson says that this has sparked discussion about the Red Hill, and they are already reviewing the Lincoln Alexander Parkway, but at this point, there is no direction to change what is currently in place.
