Racist rant outrage

A video of a racist incident in a Mississauga medical clinic has gone viral. It shows a woman demanding treatment for her son from a white doctor.

“You’re saying in this whole hospital there isn’t one white doctor?”

Another person in the waiting room recorded the incident on his cellphone. It happened at the Rapid Access to Medical Specialists in Mississauga on Sunday and it already generated more than 40 000 views.

Maurice Brenner, a human rights expert, says it’s illegal for a parent to deny their child medical treatment based on a factor such as skin colour or race. Legally the only time patients can make requests for their doctor is based on gender.

While the boy was later treated by a doctor at the clinic, the clinic isn’t saying if it agreed to her demands. Brenner says if she had withheld treatment the mother could have faced legal action.
