Some Canadian organizations are among those calling for a global asbestos ban today.
Over 150 groups from around the world made the call after the Quebec government announced it would lend $58 million to re-open the Jeffrey Mine in the town of Asbestos last month. Opponents want major producers in Canada, Brazil, Kazakhstan and Russia to end mining and exports and to tell citizens about the health risks associated with asbestos. Activists argue it is linked to cancer.
