The Ontario Minister of Long-Term Care was in Hamilton on Thursday to announce the purchase of the former Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital.

The property will include facilities like two long-term care homes, 41 affordable housing units, 270 senior housing units and 832 market housing units.

“When the Hamilton site is fully developed, 512 long-term care residents will have a modern and comfortable place to call home,” says Natalia Kusendova-Bashta, minister of long-term care.

Additionally, 7 acres of land will be given to Mohawk College and for municipal conservation use.

The announcement also included plans to convert Century Manor, a local heritage site, into housing as well.

The property is at 290 Fennel Ave. West in the west end of the city, behind a Mohawk College campus.

The property was purchased through the province’s Surplus Lands Program, which allows the province to purchase unused and excess land for housing, health care and educational facilities.
