(Video updated) Ontario is introducing new legislation today aimed at protecting students from the dangers of concussions.

The Education Amendment Act (Concussions), 2012 is part of a new strategy in the province. Since 2003-04, concussions have been on the rise, increasing emergency room visits by 58 percent.

The new act will provide resources to parents, teachers and other school staff about the seriousness of concussions and raise more awareness in schools about the dangers. Ontario is the first province in Canada to introduce comprehensive legislation on concussions in schools.

The symptoms of a concussion include confusion, headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and loss of memory.
