The provincial government has awarded St. Catharines and Welland a combined $4.5 million for the municipalities’ efforts with building more housing.

Municipalities that achieve at least 80 per cent of their provincially mandated housing targets are eligible for awards through the province’s Building Faster Fund.

The province says St. Catharines reached 97 per cent of its goal with 1,064 new housing units and Welland exceeded its goal by 23 per cent with 528 new units.

The Ontario government says the funding is to be used for more housing initiatives.
