The provincial government has approved the voluntary merger of the Brant County Health Unit and the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.

The merger was included in new proposed legislation unveiled Monday, called the More Convenient Care Act.

The approval follows a jointly prepared proposal from both health units that argued a merger would enhance public health capacity, improve service delivery and unify community partners.

The proposal came after the Ontario government offered funding and support for health units willing to merge.

The new combined organization will be called Grand Erie Public Health and will begin operations in 2025.
