The Progressive Conservatives elect a speaker

The legislature has resumed for a rare summer session. It comes a month after Premier Doug Ford led the Progressive Conservatives to a majority government last month.

The first order of business? Electing a speaker. Wellington-Halton Hills PC MPP Ted Arnott won on the first ballot.

Premier Doug Ford took his seat at Queen’s Park for the first time after being elected as a rookie MPP.

It’s also a first for MPP Ted Arnott who was elected speaker of the house. He has experience as an assistant speaker, and says he’s up for the job.

Ford promised to repeal and replace the controversial sex-ed curriculum during the spring election.

It included discussions about same-sex marriage, gender identity and masturbation.

Earlier today, education minister Lisa Thompson announced the province will be reverting to the old sex-ed curriculum in the fall.

The province will outline its priorities in a throne speech tomorrow, but Tory house leader Todd Smith has already said it will move quickly to scrap cap and trade, end the York University strike and cancel a controversial wind farm project.

Opposition leader Horwath says she’s waiting to see what the Ford government will do for the people.
