A community garden in a neighbourhood in north Hamilton has been temporarily closed after contaminants were found in the some soil.

One sample of soil testing at the Powell Park community garden, at the corner of Harvey Street and Birch Avenue, found elevated levels of contaminants.

Hamilton officials say the health risk is expected to be low, and the closure is a precaution.

Residents are being asked not to enter the fenced garden area and not to plant, harvest, or consume produce from the site until further notice.

City staff are working with environmental experts and landowners to determine the next steps to reopen the garden safely.

Updates are expected over the next few weeks, as options such as solid replacement are explored.
