Posties protest proposed back-to-work legislation
Postal workers rallied in east-end Toronto Thursday, to protest Ottawa’s plan to legislate an end to their dispute with Canada Post.
Workers say the government should stay out of the dispute and let them settle their contract with Canada Post on their own terms.
“We should be duking this out with Canada Post as we have been in collective bargaining that’s the only way in which you can get a fair contract, legislation will not do us a fair contract.” “I don’t think legislation and bringing us back to work is going to force accountability. I think it’s going to allow them to take away pensions, it’s going to allow them to strip the rights of other individuals, even work for pay and work for equal value.”
Federal labour minister Lisa Raitt has already served notice that she plans to introduce back-to-work legislation, meaning the bill could be up for a vote next week. Raitt says the dispute is affecting the economy and hurting people who are not part of the dispute.
