Hamilton police are looking to speak with a witness of a random, unprovoked stabbing that seriously injured a woman in Stoney Creek last week.

It happened shortly after 8 a.m. on Sept. 24 in the area of Queenston Road and Centennial Parkway.

Investigators say a 45-year-old woman was sitting on a bench reading a book in the Eastgate Square bus terminal shelter when she was attacked from behind.

The woman suffered serious, non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers say the interaction was brief and the male suspect fled in an unknown direction.

Police describe the suspect as having a dark complexion. He was wearing a black T-shirt, dark-coloured pants and may have had a backpack on at the time of the stabbing.

Investigators say they have learned that a female bystander was waiting at the same bus terminal during the time of the attack. Officers say they would like to speak with her as she may have valuable information for this case.

Witnesses who were in the area between 7:45 and 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 24 are asked to contact Det. Colin Bromley at 905-546-2918 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
