Police now probing pair of central Hamilton shootings

(Update) Police in Hamilton are investigating two shootings in the past 36 hours – one, in broad daylight.

Around 6:15 pm last night, witnesses say two black men walking on either side of Main St at East Ave opened fire on each other. At least five shots were fired.

Bullet holes can be found in the window of Marz Paints and the side of the building. A bullet also went right through both back windows of a car parked in the parking lot. Across the street, in what appears to be part of an exchange of gunfire, police found a bullet hole in the front window of a dental office. Shell casings were found up and down the street.

Police cordoned off the area for about three hours last night while they gathered evidence.

Earlier in the day, around 2 am, police say there was another shooting just six blocks away. Five bullets were fired at the Homestead Bar and Grill at King & Ashley Sts. A woman was inside at the time but luckily wasn’t injured.

Manager Elizabeth Scott told CHCH News, “I got a phone call from my bartender at quarter to three in the morning. She thought rocks were being thrown at the window but there were fireworks that night too. She was in the kitchen filling the mop bucket, I told her to call the owner, they came down, police were already here and there was a bullet shot in the window.”

“My bartender cleans this one corner first but thank God she was in the kitchen filling her mop bucket up or she would have possibly been almost hit by the bullet because it’s so high up. They found five bullets there and I don’t know what the situation is but apparently two guys went running down the street.”

Police have not made arrests in either incident although they say they are looking for two black male suspects in the shooting on Main.

This is the third gun incident in this area in three months. An 18 year old man was shot in March. Residents of the area believe drugs were involved.
