Permanent shutdown

A part of Hamilton’s industrial history is shutting down permanently. U.S. Steel has announced that it’s mill at Hamilton Works will shut the doors at the end of this year. And while there isn’t as much steel produced in Steeltown as there was in its peak in the 1970’s, there is still an impact. Elise Copps has the first of several related stories.
The blast furnace at U.S. Steel’s Hamilton Works, formerly Stelco, will never again be lit. This is the final end for steelmaking operations at the plant that has been around for 100 years.
The announcement was not entirely unexpected. U.S. Steel bought the Stelco operations in 2007.
