Penny sticking around until 2013

The penny is getting a last-minute reprieve before being taken out of circulation.

Originally, the Royal Canadian Mint expected to start taking them out of circulation by this fall. It stopped producing the coins back in May 2012.

Retailers and other small businesses complained that the transition to a penny-free marketplace would be too much of a burden right before the busy holiday season.

The penny will stick around until finally being ended as circulated currency on February 4, 2013.
