A 34-year-old man has died after what police say appears to have been an unprovoked attack.

Hamilton police were called to Peddles Tavern in the city’s east end after a man had  been stabbed in what police believe was an unprovoked attack.

Shaw Ghafoori, a 34-year-old man from the Hamilton area, was taken to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Pierce Herod, a 28-year-old man from the St. Catharines area, was arrested at the scene and charged with second-degree murder.

It appears the victim and the suspect did not know each other, and the attack was unprovoked.

Police say the accused had exited the bar, and when the victim went to step out, he was stabbed once in the upper body.

This is the city’s tenth homicide of the year and the second major violent incident at this venue, located at the corner of Barton Street East and Fairfield Avenue.

Hamilton police held a press conference on Sunday to address the homicide.
