Members of Parliament and lawyers involved in the negotiations are now turning their attention to the future, and the decisions Parliamentarians could make in the next year.

The Supreme Court granted Parliament a year to come up with a new law for medically-assisted death if it chooses to do so, because Parliament does have the ability to override or opt out of certain decisions made by the courts. That’s why there’s no law governing abortion in canada.

Those involved or heavily invested in today’s decisions hope that doesn’t happen in the case of medically assisted death.

Stevem Fletcher, MP – Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia, said that he was shocked that some of the wording used by the Supreme Court was very similar to the wording he used for two private members bills he introduced back in march of last year concerning medically-assisted death.

Those bills were met with mixed reviews. nevertheless, he hopes that his bill could be used as a foundation for Parliamentarians going forward during the next 12 months.

And unless a law is drafted soon, this will be a hot button topic with the federal election coming up.
