Ottawa signs deals with 11 municipalities to house homeless

The federal government has signed deals with nine more Ontario municipalities and two in Saskatchewan to address homelessness.
The agreements are worth a combined $91.5 million over two years and meant to support the municipalities’ encampment response plans.
Those plans include creating new shelter spaces and increasing transitional housing options.
Durham, Peel, Hamilton, Niagara, Waterloo, Ottawa, Toronto, Sudbury and York in Ontario have signed onto a deal, as did Saskatoon and Regina.
A report from the federal government released Wednesday morning reads that Ottawa was unable to work out a deal with the Ontario and Saskatchewan governments in time to deliver funding before the winter.
The municipalities will reportedly match federal funding.
Combined with the agreement with the City of London, made on Dec. 13, 2024, to address unsheltered homelessness, the federal government says they will deliver over $88 million to ten municipalities in Ontario, and about $8 million to two cities in Saskatchewan.
The federal government says more agreements with provinces and territories are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
