OPP to Ontario drivers: Move Over

Ontario Provincial Police say drivers are still not complying with the 2003 Move Over law.

The law requires drivers to slow down when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks parked on the side of the highway with their lights on.

If the highway has more than one lane, drivers are required to move over and leave one lane between them and the parked vehicles if it can be done safely.

The law carries a $490 to $2,000 fine plus three demerit points on conviction.

So far this year, provincial police have laid more than 400 charges against drivers who failed to move over when able.

In 2019, there were more than 1,700 charges.
