Ontario reports 1,699 COVID-19 cases, three deaths as vaccination eligibility expanded

Ontario reported 1,699 cases of COVID-19 and three deaths on Monday, as the province opens up vaccinations to residents 75 and older.

The daily case count comes as the province completed 31,089 tests. The reported positivity rate, which takes into account the date tests were done, is 5.4 per cent.

The death toll is now 7,244 people with about 54 per cent of those deaths reported in residents of long-term care homes.

Another 1,175 cases have been marked as resolved.

Hamilton

  • 11,932 total cases — up 93 from Sunday
  • 10,736 resolved cases
  • 716 active cases
  • 104 in hospital
  • 300 deaths
  • 69,251 vaccine doses given

Halton

  • 10,396 total cases — up 42 from Sunday
  • 9,887 resolved cases
  • 309 active cases
  • 22 in hospital
  • 200 deaths
  • 364 total variant cases (includes confirmed cases and those who screened positive)

Niagara

  • 9,210 total cases — up 27 from Sunday
  • 8,494 resolved cases
  • 342 active cases
  • 8 in hospital
  • 374 deaths
  • 16,897 vaccine doses given by Niagara Public Health

Brant

  • 1,691 total cases — up 12 from Sunday
  • 1,605 resolved cases
  • 73 active cases
  • 13 deaths
  • 2 in hospital
  • 37 total variant cases
  • 18,972 vaccine doses given; 2,566 people fully vaccinated

The province administered 31,335 vaccine doses on Sunday. As of 8 p.m. a total of 1,553,040 doses have been given.

There are 299,297 Ontario residents who are fully vaccinated.

There are 813 patients in hospital with COVID-19 in Ontario. There are 298 people in intensive care and 186 of them are on ventilators.

There are now 1,340 confirmed cases of the B.1.1.7 lineage of the virus, which was first reported in the U.K.

Confirmed cases of the B.1.351 strain, first reported in South Africa, is now 48.

There are 36 confirmed cases of the P.1 strain first reported in Brazil.

The province is also reporting another 140 cases of the virus in schools.
