The Ontario government has announced they are investing over $345 million at McMaster University and Mohawk College.
According to a news release sent to media Friday, the investment is part of Ontario’s new funding model to bring an additional $6.4 billion to universities, colleges and Indigenous institutes across the province.
The goal of the funding is to bring long-term sustainability to the education sector.
“McMaster and Mohawk are world-class institutions that have long been an integral part of Hamilton’s economy and workforce,” said Neil Lumsden, MPP for Hamilton East – Stoney Creek. “This historic investment ensures they can keep delivering the programs that get students into good, in-demand careers right here at home – this is great news for students, local employers and the future of our city.”
A 30 per cent increase in operating funding is set to hit the sector in fall 2026 – bringing the total amount to $7 billion. The focus of this capital is to deliver programs that align with student and labour-market demand.
Also included will be specialized funding for small, rural, northern and French institutions.
Ontario is investing $1.7 billion to fund 70,000 in-demand seats across the province – which will expand enrollment in health care, skilled trades, teaching and STEM programs.
The province says the new funding model will increase base per student funding at post-secondary institutions by six per cent for full-time students and 30 per cent for college part-time students.
