Ontario government creates board to dissolve Peel Region by 2025

The Ontario government has appointed five members to a transition board to help with the process of breaking up Peel Region by Jan. 1, 2025.

This will make Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon independent municipalities.

The board members are responsible for making sure that all three locations, their residents and employees are respected and treated fairly during the transition.

They are also responsible for making financially sustainable recommendations to the government.

Steve Clark, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, appointed the following individuals to the transition board:

  • John Livey, Chair
  • Tracey Cook
  • Eric Jolliffe
  • Sean Morley
  • Peter Weltman

Clark said the board members bring a range of experience across the public and private sectors.

This includes municipal government and administration, policing, business law and business management, infrastructure delivery and the provincial and federal governments.

At this time, Peel Region is responsible for services such as paramedics, health programs and recycling in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.

The province also plans to build 1.5 million homes by 2031 as the combined population of Peel Region is expected to increase to two million by 2041.
