The province of Ontario is making things a little easier for residents interested in learning more about organ donation.

The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) says the province has agreed to put a new tick box on tax returns so people can learn more about the donation process.

The territory of Nunavut has also agreed to participate in the service being offered by the CRA.

Checking “Yes” in the box would allow the CRA to share a taxpayer’s contact information with the province exclusively for the purpose of getting information about tissue and organ donation.

Residents are required to register to be an organ donor in Ontario, even if they have signed a donor card. Registration can be completed online or at any Service Ontario Centre.

With less than one quarter of Canadians registered as organ and tissue donors, the revenue agency says it is uniquely positioned to help raise awareness around the issue.

It says it intends to work with other provinces and territories interested in participating in the future.
